~The Painter's Keys, A Time For Pride

Here is another letter from "The Painter's Keys" I wanted to share with you....

Time for pride

Dear Izabella,

"Pride," said Alexander Pope, "is the never-failing vice of fools." This certainly applies when we kid ourselves that something we've done poorly is somehow worthy. Fact is, pride's always suspect, even dangerous. Religions warn against it. Along with envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed and sloth, pride is one of the Seven Deadly Sins.

But I'm calling it "true pride" here, and I think it's good stuff. A sense of pride is one of the finer arts that we need to learn. We need shots of pride when we enter our work place, when we handle our tools, as we proceed in our processes, and when our projects are drawing to a close. Here are a few ideas for the care and maintenance of pride:

Develop professional, workmanlike habits.
Build joy into your working hours.
Take care, be patient, raise standards.
Organize for efficiency and creative flow.
Know that unrest is part of the program.
Gain power from learning and knowledge.
Demand artistic truth and integrity.
Be in love with your own intuition.
In humility, find your divinity within.
Sign with eternity in mind.

Every creator, to a varying degree, has what I call an "intrinsic passion." It's an exhilarating state that can easily be deflected by obligation, expectation, guilt and other factors. Unless one's passion is somewhat followed, no number of mechanical motivators will work very well--and scant satisfaction will occur. But satisfaction is not the same as pride. It's actually dissatisfaction that leads to higher accomplishments and true pride. Here, I'm talking about the well-being of the living, breathing artist.

Feeling he lacked integrity is what propelled Mark Rothko into his last miserable years of depression, drink and suicide. Appalled by the high prices his work was achieving and by the seeming simplicity and repetition of his dealer-motivated style, he angrily fussed over minor measurements and innocent slights--masking his lack of pride and diminishing self-esteem. The same could be said of Vincent, who put all of his prideful optimism into anticipation and had the additional burden of perceived personal failure.

Best regards, Robert

PS: "No artist is pleased. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others." (Martha Graham)

Esoterica: If you ever doubted the grace of pride, you should see a movie called "Born into Brothels." It's a tribute to the resiliency of childhood and the restorative power of art--a portrait of several unforgettable children who live in the red-light district of Calcutta, where their mothers work as prostitutes. Zana Briski, a New York-based photographer, gives each of the children a camera and teaches them to look at the world with new eyes. The children get to enlarge, frame, compare, sign and exhibit their photos. The show travels to other lands and the kids go with it, filled with pride.

A quote by Michael de Meng~

I read this statement today in his yahoo group, and I really wanted to share it.....

Date: Tue, 24 Jan 2006 03:15:07 -0000 From: "Michael deMeng"

Subject: secret? what secrets?

I believe that Art should move forward without restriction and without secrets. If someone is so determined to make Art like mine, then let them, eventually though, they will let their style slip in...it's inevitable (assuming what they are trying to do is explore is true to their heart). I never understand it when people are afraid of others stealing ideas...this is how art grows, by theft - by theft and reinterpretation. Nothing in a museum wasn't the product of artistic theft, but the artists expanded those concepts.

So weak!

I have came to the conclusion, I AM WEAK!!! when it comes to coffee! I couldn't stand it for one more minute...I crumbled under the pressure & made a pot of decaf coffee with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

I must admit....My name is Izabella & I am addicted to coffee ;)

3 days of he@#

It's been 3 days of pure he#&....I tell you!! I have been having this awful heartburn, that goes into my back & into my ears....(getting older, is just not fun) So I figured, all the holiday coffee, chocolate, cookies, bad fattening food has taken it's toll on my lil' ol' self~ I decided I better knock off the coffee & start eating better....well, besides the splitting horendous headache I have had for 3 days, I can finally say today I finally feel a lil' better..Thank God!!!

The first day of quitting coffee (I drink decaf!) I went to the grocery store...how many people did I see in the store drinking Starbucks coffee, in their sweet lil' cups.... 5 people! I never see people drinking coffee at the grocery store! Then they decided to open a expresso machine in the deli area! So the smell was wafting throughout the whole store....it was pure TORTURE I tell you! Just to top it off, on the way home, driving next to 3 different people in their cars, sipping, yes, you guessed it... STARBUCKS! It's all a conspiracy! :)

So it is now day 3...and I feel as my head is clear & feeling a bit more energetic....I can't believe symptoms like this can occur from decaf coffee. Every morning is very difficult to not grind those lovely beans, and taste that yummy coffee with a scoop of vanilla ice cream! I have substituted it for heating up apple cider....not quite the same! I will survive this~
