The Painters Keys~ twice a week letter~

Christmas Eve! I wanted to share this letter from the Painters Keys....twice a week I receive his letters....there is a link at the end of the letter to subscribe...they are usually very inspirational & thought provoking.

Wanted for Christmas

December 23, 2005

Dear Izabella,

I may be totally wrong on this one. I'm thinking that artists are among those who don't really want to receive too many gifts for the Holiday Season. It may have something to do with the overabundance of joy in our daily lives--or the consequent guilt that arises, but we artists, by and large, are not into materialism. At this time of year there is little that we might covet. Actually, this year the only thing that I want is one of those radio-controlled tarantulas. And that's hardly a gift--it's entertainment for others--controlled by me of course--perhaps to set off drama among the nieces. They are nice nieces. "Funny Uncle Bob," I'll hear them scream when my radio-controlled tarantula haltingly emerges from under the Christmas tree. "They come in with shipments of Bolivian trees," I'll tell them. The little darlings.

But I digress. The only thing that I can ever remember really craving was the know-how to do a decent painting. I'd seen what the really great painters could do. For my stocking I wanted a zapper--perhaps a pill or an easily gulped liquid. Picasso chutzpah, Sargent talent, Monet joy. Put this stuff in bottles and you could name your price. Pop one just before stepping into the studio, and "Schazzam," I'd be the wizard I always knew I was. Actually, I think these twice weekly letters are like little silent pills--some that work for one and not another--or that work one time and not the next. "What a bunch of pap," wrote one subscriber after my recent letter about creativity and love. She unsubscribed from the freebee. That's the good thing about giving a gift. No one ever complains about the price.

But I digress. We don't need stuff. We need ideas and energy and subjects and motivation and time and lots of other things that can't be bought and are not sold at Wal-Mart. Happiness is not under the Christmas tree but somewhere in the air above it. It doesn't stick to traditional dates or statutory holidays. It can sometimes be found on the most ordinary of Thursdays. Sometimes it just blows in like a swallow in December. Sometimes when you want it most you can't have it. And sometimes you're up to your elbows. That's why we don't need regular stuff. We're into bigger stuff. And if we need tools or paint or clay or something we just go out and buy it anyway. Which reminds me, I'm outa here--last minute stuff.

Merry Christmas,

Robert

PS: "Thanks to my work everything's going well." (Claude Monet)

Esoterica: It's a sort of ecstasy. It's like a drug. It's that feeling you get when you've given everything in a work of art. And it connects, really connects, not with everyone, but with someone--maybe someone special. It's the possibility of the existence of such a high that keeps us believing in things even more preposterous than a jolly bearded chap descending over 6000 chimneys per second. "And for a breath of ecstasy / Give all you have been, or could be." (Sara Teasdale)

Gift idea: Give your special friend a gift of the twice-weekly letter. Comes down the chimney twice a week. We'll even let them know it's from you. We've got a special place where you can do it: http://painterskeys.com/clickbacks/giftscribe.php

My first mail art~

This is my first mail art project...it is made on a 8 X 10 canvas, painted with dark colors, brown, burgandy, red & black, collaged with vintage sheet music, vintage text, an image of Marilyn Monroe, stained with walnut ink, swavoski crystals, plastic snowflake sprinkled with vintage glass glitter in pink & silver.

How embarrassing to bring it to the post office & have them ask you "don't you want to wrap this before you mail it?" then you have to explain that is for everyone to enjoy...so I wonder what stories it could tell of it's journey to it's destination, it took 13 days to get there! I hope she likes it~

My first fat book swap~

This was a fun project...this was my first swap...I am hooked on round robin/swaps!

I made one original, then scanned copies of 18 more & added swavoski crystals, ribbons, fibers and one vintage typewriter key to each of the 18 pieces, (this image doesn't show the embellishments) then I sent them away, to the person in charge of binding...what a job that must have been!

Last week I received the finished book....18 ZNE artists & a what a treasure it is! I can't wait to do another~

I believe there will be an auction on ebay for charity...I will be sure to give more details when I hear news~

You can check out ZNE artists here...

Does it look like Christmas in Vegas?!

Sunny days, no rain, no snow, weather in the high 50's & 60's....driving around in a vintage car....It just doesn't feel like Christmas.

I shouldn't be complaining, because when I lived in Seattle, I couldn't wait to be in a city with lil' rain and here I am, but having a hard time getting used to it, after living in Washington my whole life...I miss the cold days & warm yummy Starbucks coffee~

Well, I am off for a ride around town....did I mention before how scary this car is?! it should be illegal to make such a thing~ ohhh, but I love it...

An inspiring note from Michael de Meng~

This is a note that goes with the post below, about the meaning behind his "art giveaway" ~ How inspiring!!!

I feel that it is important for artists to give back, because that'swhat we do...or should do. I've often felt that artists have to findways to make sure art is available to everyone interested, no mattereconomic status...this competition is one way I can level the playingfield. As an artist who is supported by my art, I'm sure I speak for myfellow artists: Support the arts. I say this not convince people tobuy my work (though that is always a bonus) but rather to point outthe importance of art in all or our lives. A step closer topreventing a grayer world. So I appeal to everyone to value art. Here's a few ways to do it.1. Make Art - one way to avoid the gray world syndrome is to make stuff.2. Go to, and support museums especially local ones. Museums areplaces for everyone to enjoy art - get involved and promote artistsand ideas you like.3. Invest in Art...not WalMart. I know that not everyone has a hugebank account, but set aside a certain amount each year to spend onoriginal art. Also, one of the best things is to own the art ofpeople you know and like. For an artist there is nothing moregratifying than making a piece for someone you care about. Also thereis nothing more gratifying than owning a piece of work created bysomeone you care about. My home is filled with art, not with my ownart, but with art made by artists who are dear friends.4. Teach your children the importance of Art. Tell them why the worldis a better place when art is valued. Teach them that appreciatingart is important but doing art is more important. Could you imagine aworld where art was a daily activity for everyone. Wouldn't the worldbe a more beautiful place.5. Talk about art. Your interests can rapidly spread to others.6. Be compassionate. Nothing moves the world into an artistic realmmore effectivly than love and empathy. Remember that art is whatconnects us to other people, the world, and beyond.Just a few things to think about.Michael deMeng

Michael de Meng ~art giveaway~

I wanted to share this note received from Micheal de Meng, in a group that I am involved in...I think this is such a great act of selflessness, to give of himself.

I love this idea~ and wish to do the same, with a "pass it forward" meaning! I loved that movie~

I can't wait to see who the lucky winner will be~

Date: Thu, 08 Dec 2005 23:31:50 -0000 From: "Michael deMeng" assemblage@michaeldemeng.com

Subject: Michael deMeng is giving away a piece of art for the holidays.Hey Collage Cats, thought you might be interested in this...Okay here's the deal. I've been thinking that because of all the support that everyone has given to me this last year, I've decided to give a little something back. I'm giving away an art freebie...that's right, free art. I'll be giving away one of my mixed media "trashy novels". Those of you who have taken a Book Shrine class will have seen the piece before. Here's the prize: http://www.michaeldemeng.com/bookcombo2.jpg The rules and the skinny. 1. Email me on December 15th (the next full moon) between the hours of 6 p.m. and 12. p.m EST 2. Send the email to: assemblage@michaeldemeng.com

(IMPORTANT: must go to this address. Any entries sent to my other addresses will not count.) 3. The Subject line MUST read: "Where's my book, dag nab it?" 4. You are limited to 2 emails. 5. To win: you must be the 66th (year of my birth) email I receive between those hours. All I ask is that you speak kindly of me and forward my site to someone who might be interested (this is an honor system sort of thing). I will annouce the winner the morning of Dec. 16th (I will mention your name unless you don't want me to...please indicate) and will send the Art Book out that same day. Not sure if it will get there before Xmas...but should be close. Ho Ho Ho. Also there will be no favoritism...the big winner will be strictly chosen by the rules above (or the stars...depending on your belief system). Good luck Michael deMeng www.michaeldemeng.com

The broken vase~

So here is the small version of the story of why I haven't been writing lately~

Shopping at TJ Maxx
Pick up huge glass vase
It slips from my hands
Slices my right hand to pieces
In shock, blood everywhere on white floor
Pass out almost, sit down on floor
Manager sees me, freaks out
Helps me to the back room
Leaving a blood trail
My 2 boys slipping in it, behind me
Manager wraps it up
She has to take a report
I am freaking out, sobbing & crying
In pain
She lets us leave
My 8 year old helping me outside to the truck
I can't put 3 yr old in car seat, my hand is killing me
I am in hysterics, I have to get to the hospital
I cry for help, this young gangbanger comes to my rescue
He puts him in the car seat
I hug him, leaving blood on his nice clothes
I drive away
Crying
To the neighbors, I drop off kids
In pain
I reach the emergency, sobbing, a huge line of people
They tell me, one doctor, 4 hour wait
I leave sobbing and in pain
Drive to the next one.....2 hour wait!
omg! drive to drugstore
buy $100 worth of medical stuff
go home
unwrap my hand...huge gashes everywhere
Almost pass out, blood explodes, so gross
Consider driving back to emergency or calling 911
I clean it, PAIN!
A package of butterfly bandages and wrapped up nicely
Still in pain
Get the kids next door, take some sleeping pills
Life is hell for the next 12 days! You can only imagine
Much better now, but hand numb & tingly
Frankenstein hand, is what my oldest says~
